Dare to be Different

The rain splashed onto the window.

Soojin scanned the room for the digital clock.  18:00. The time shone brightly in white words under the black background. It was time to go home from work. She went back to her desktop, closed all the tabs that she had been working on for the past 10 hours, and packed her phone and charging cable away.

Soojin’s colleague was yelling at her again. “Park Soojin! Why won’t you pack all those proposals on your desk away? You’re not even done yet! You should finish it at home.”

“I want to get some rest so I can work better tomorrow,” Soojin replied. She went past and grabbed her umbrella from the bucket. Hers was the only red one out of every one of her colleague’s black umbrellas. It had been a trend for people to use black umbrellas.

Out in the streets, Soojin walked back to her house. Using a red umbrella, wearing a white dress with a huge ribbon on, people stared at her as she walked past.

“Such a strange outfit.”

“Woah, she’s carrying a red umbrella.”

Soojin looked around. Most of the women around her had long, dark hair tied in a low ponytail. They wore black and white suits, mini skirts, and large purses. Soojin looked down, realising her outfit was not the same as the others, but she didn’t care.

She dared to be different.
